STFI showcases new Textile LAB Professional with focus on climate protection and sustainable technologies

Design meets technology: STFI themed day on 3 December 2026

The Sächsisches Textilforschungsinstitut e. V. (STFI) in Chemnitz is organising a themed day on 3 December 2026, focusing on climate protection and the environment. As well as showcasing current applications for green cities and natural fibres for lightweight construction, the event will feature machine demonstrations in the new Textile LAB Professional. Under the motto ‘Design meets Technology’, this networking event will also provide an insight into artistic student projects, thereby facilitating a professional exchange on creative perspectives and modern technologies for climate protection and the environment.

Experience research and discover technologies

The focus will be on the new Textile LAB Professional. Participants will gain insights into the new research and development environment and experience modern textile technologies, demonstrators and practical applications. This will highlight how scientific questions give rise to concrete solutions for industrial practice. Specialist presentations will also provide insights into current developments relating to sustainable materials, climate protection and innovative manufacturing technologies. The themed day will showcase different perspectives on textile innovation and its application.

When technology meets design

Particular emphasis is placed on the connection between research and art. Works from the Schneeberg Faculty of Applied Arts at WHZ Zwickau and Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle open up creative perspectives on materials, technology and design. These works bring to life the inspiration that can arise from the interplay between textile research and creative development.

Exchange, networking and new perspectives

In addition to the specialist programme, the themed day offers opportunities for personal exchange and networking. Experts from academia, industry and the creative sector come together to discuss developments, share experiences and forge new contacts.

Registration and programme

The themed day is a free event and will take place at the Sächsisches Textilforschungsinstitut e. V. (STFI) in Chemnitz.

An eco-friendly alternative to fluorocarbon treatments

Protective and outdoor clothing derives its durable water-, dirt- and oil- repellent properties from the application of fluorinated polymers or per- and polyfluorinated low-molecular- weight chemicals (PFCs). The beneficial properties thus achieved on textiles are offset by environmental and human health risks. For manufacturers of sports, medical, protective and automotive textiles, researchers at the Sächsisches Textilforschungsinstitut e.V. and the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research have developed liquid-applied dispersions and solutions to functionalise textiles without the use of fluorine.

STFI highlights textile circular economy and alternative fibres at INDEX™ 2026

From 19 to 22 May 2026, INDEX will invite visitors to Lake Geneva for the world's leading nonwovens trade fair. The Centre of Excellence in Nonwovens at the Sächsisches Textilforschung- sinstitut e.V. (STFI) will be in attendance to present the latest developments in nonwovens research. In the field of the textile circular economy, the STFI will present acoustically effective nonwovens made from chemical recycling residues. The range also includes innovations aimed at replacing conventional raw materials, such as the biobased and biodegradable polymer polybutylene succinate (PBS) and Kendyr as an alternative to cotton.

Regional hemp bast for lightweight construction profiles

The cultivation of fibre hemp for the production of ropes and clothing has a long tradition in Saxony. Due to its excellent fibre properties, it is also suitable as a renewable raw material for reinforcement in fibre composites. At the STFI and IWU in Chemnitz, the CannaPul project is cur- rently investigating how a regional value chain for hemp-based lightweight construction profiles can be established. To this end, the technical processing of hemp fibres into continuous fibre strands and their embedding in a suitable bio-based matrix are being investigated.
